BEDFORD, N.Y. (AP) ? Family and friends gathered Saturday at a modest stone church in a hamlet north of New York City for the funeral of Mary Richardson Kennedy, the latest member of that charmed and cursed family to fall victim to tragedy and inner demons.

The service, held on a beautiful spring morning, was private, but the list of celebrities attending was a testament to both Kennedy star power, and Mary’s knack for friendship.

The mourners included actors Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase and Edward James Olmos, tennis great John McEnroe and musician Paul Shaffer. Glenn Close sang and “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David spoke during the ceremony, according to a program left at the church.

Mary’s estranged husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., delivered the eulogy.

Speaking to reporters outside the church before the service, Mary’s sister-in-law and nearly lifelong friend, Kerry Kennedy, recalled her as “brilliant” and “beautiful.”

“She cared so very, very deeply about everybody around her,” she said.

But she added that Kennedy had fought a lifelong struggle against depression.

The 52-year-old architectural designer and environmentalist was found dead of an apparent suicide Wednesday at the family’s estate in Bedford. Her death followed a difficult two years, during which her husband filed for divorce and she was charged twice with driving while intoxicated.

Still, Kerry Kennedy said, those troubles didn’t stop her from developing “really deep, rich, rich friendships,” with friends in every corner of the globe.

“She was an angel who was brought to us, to live with us here on earth, and I think that God just brought her back up to heaven, and said, ‘You don’t have to fight for me anymore,’” Kerry Kennedy said, her voice breaking.

The casket was carried into St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church by a group that included three of Mary Kennedy’s older children, one of her sisters and the hotelier Andr? Balazs.

A bell tolled at the end of the service. Robert Kennedy touched the hearse lightly as it departed with her body.

Mary Richardson married into the Kennedy family in 1994, but had been close to the clan since meeting Kerry at boarding school as a teenager. The pair wound up being roommates for 15 years, including their time together at Brown University.

She had four children with Robert, the son of assassinated U.S. senator and Attorney General Robert Kennedy, but the couple separated years ago. He filed for divorce in 2010. The case was pending when she died.

Shortly after the split, her internal struggles became public when she was arrested twice on charges of driving while intoxicated.

The domestic turmoil extended into preparations for her funeral. One of Mary’s brothers went to court to request custody of her body, which could potentially have spoiled a Kennedy plan to bury her near the family’s seaside compound in Hyannisport, Mass.

That internment was initially scheduled to take place later Saturday, although it was unclear whether the arrangement had been altered as a result of the court action.

Robert Kennedy and a lawyer for the Richardson family spent part of the day in court Friday arguing the case, before Mary’s body was released to her husband just hours before her planned wake. Details of the case were sealed by a judge.

Diabetes Can Take a Toll on Your Emotions

THURSDAY, May 17 (HealthDay News) — Many people know diabetes — both type 1 and type 2 — can take a serious toll on physical health. But these blood-sugar disorders also can affect your emotions and, in turn, your emotions can wreak havoc on your diabetes control.

Extremes in blood-sugar levels can cause significant mood changes, and new research suggests that frequent changes in blood-sugar levels (called glycemic variability) also can affect mood and quality of life for those with diabetes.

Depression has long been linked to diabetes, especially type 2. It’s still not clear, however, whether depression somehow triggers diabetes or if having diabetes leads to being depressed.

More recent research in people with type 1 diabetes has found that long periods of high blood-sugar levels can trigger the production of a hormone linked to the development of depression.

People with type 1 diabetes no longer can make their own insulin; people with type 2 diabetes need insulin treatment because their bodies can no longer produce it in sufficient quantities.

“Diabetes gives you so much to worry about that it’s exhausting. It can make you feel powerless,” said Joe Solowiejczyk, a certified diabetes educator and a manager of diabetes counseling and training at the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute in Milpitas, Calif. “I think it’s important to acknowledge that, from time to time, you’re going to have a meltdown. You’re going to have days when you feel exasperated, frustrated, sad, in denial and physically exhausted.”

Solowiejczyk, who has type 1 diabetes himself, said these feelings become a problem “when you’re not able to get on with your life, and you’re persistently not taking care of your diabetes.”

Not only does diabetes increase the risk of serious health complications, but uncontrolled diabetes also may worsen depression, causing a vicious cycle.

In addition to an increased risk of depression, diabetes can affect mood even from minute to minute. For example, someone who experiences low blood sugar may suddenly become irritable, even combative, and may act as if they are drunk, slurring their words.

Low blood-sugar levels (also known as hypoglycemia) occur when someone has taken too much insulin or hasn’t eaten enough food. Exercise, alcohol and many other factors can lower blood-sugar levels unpredictably.

The problem, Solowiejczyk said, is “that the brain operates totally on glucose. When you don’t have enough glucose, things start breaking down and your cognitive function doesn’t work that well. This is a physiological, not an emotional, response.”

Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association, said, “Hypoglycemia reactions are very understandable. There are also some fluctuations that are not quite in the hypoglycemia range that may affect anxiety levels.”

High blood-sugar levels (hyperglycemia) also can lead to mood changes. “Hyperglycemia can affect your ability to concentrate and can make you feel grouchy,” Solowiejczyk said. “Any change in the blood sugar outside of the normal ranges makes you feel weird and uncomfortable.”

A small study in the April issue of the journal Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics found that frequent fluctuations in blood-sugar levels in women with type 2 diabetes were associated with a lower quality of life and negative moods.

Fonseca said, however, it’s important for these findings to be replicated in a larger population.

Although diabetes and blood-sugar levels can affect emotions, emotions also can affect patients’ blood-sugar levels and diabetes control.

In another study in the same journal issue, researchers tested blood-sugar levels in non-diabetic bungee jumpers, and found that the stress of the jump caused their blood-sugar levels to rise significantly. Not surprisingly, their stress hormones also were higher due to the body’s normal fight-or-flight response. When this happens, the liver releases glucose to make energy available to the body’s cells, according to the American Diabetes Association.

People with diabetes don’t have sufficient insulin to let that glucose into the body’s cells, however, so instead of providing energy, the sugar just builds up in the blood.

Another emotional minefield often associated with type 2 diabetes is the concept of blame. Most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight, and many are sedentary. Being overweight alone, however, doesn’t cause type 2 diabetes. There are other factors, such as a genetic predisposition, at play. But because exercise and losing weight can help prevent — or, in some cases, reverse — type 2 diabetes, society often blames people with the disease. (Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is not caused by diet or lack of exercise.)

“I think there is a prejudice against overweight people and people with type 2 diabetes, and that’s something they have to deal with,” Solowiejczyk noted.

What’s important, he said, is that if you’re persistently having trouble dealing with any of the emotions that come with diabetes, you talk with your doctor, diabetes educator or therapist.

“You should be feeling bad or resentful or angry sometimes,” he said. “Diabetes is hard, and all of those feelings come along with the disease. But if you’re [irritable] and angry or if you’re sad all the time, you’re not going to take care of yourself.”

The same advice is true for partners of people with diabetes and parents of children with diabetes, he said.

The tough job market has been so hard on some Americans that they have dropped out of the running altogether.

But here?s a surprising twist: Generally, that?s not been true of older Americans.

The labor force participation rate, or the number of Americans who are working or looking for work, has declined in recent years for every age group except those who are 55 and older, according to a report released this week by the Government Accountability Office.

Older Americans generally have a lower labor force participation rate than other age groups, and for good reason: That?s the point in life when most people retire.

But the percentage of older Americans who are choosing to remain in the labor force, or to get back in it, has steadily been rising over the past 20 years and even continued to increase over the course of the recession and recovery.

About 40 percent of workers age 55 and over were working or looking for work in 2011, the GAO analysis found, compared to about 30 percent in 1990.

That?s in contrast to young and prime-age Americans, who have seen declines in labor force participate rates in recent years.

A closer look at the data shows that the real increases are coming from some of the oldest workers. Phillip Levine, an economics professor at Wellesley University, noted that labor force participation among 55- to 64-year-olds has generally been flat in the last five years, at about 64 to 65 percent.

But for workers 65 and over, labor force participation has increased from 15.5 percent in 2007 to 18.4 percent now. Levine?s analysis was based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

There are a number of potential reasons why the labor force participation rate has increased for people who we traditionally think of as being in retirement age.

One explanation may be that older workers are choosing to work longer to make up for investment losses and other financial woes as a result of the recession. Some people age 65 and older also may be getting back into the labor force because they can?t make ends meet on Social Security and retirement savings.

The GAO report said other factors keeping older workers at work may include better health and life expectancies, the increasing number of older women in the labor force and the need to stay at work to retain health benefits.

That a larger chunk of older people are working doesn?t diminish how tough the recession has been on people aged 55 and over, Levine notes.

Although the unemployment rate for older workers has generally been lower than the broader population, a job loss in that age range can be particularly devastating. That?s because it generally takes older workers longer to find a new job, and that long gap in employment just before retirement age can have a harsh impact on their retirement plans.

The GAO report to the Senate?s Special Committee on Aging focused mainly on the effect of long-term unemployment on older workers.

In testimony before the committee last week, the National Employment Law Project noted that many older workers face the double-whammy of a big employment gap and a resume that gives away their age. Both can be a turnoff to some potential employers.

Levine, who has done extensive research into older workers and the recession, said?many people in that age range are ?limping across the finish line.?

?They find some way to make ends meet from whenever they lose their job at 58 or whatever, and finally when they get to 62, Social Security provides them with a lifeline,? he said. ?It provides a means of getting by.?

Filling a Full Broadcast Schedule Before Homeroom at Texarkana’s Texas High School

Many traditional broadcast outlets don’t have the demanding schedule that Texas High School’s TigerVision has. For the 175 students involved in the program, their school day consists of standard classes and sports, as well as maintaining a high quality television station that pumps out daily and weekly cable and streamed content. All on a local, public school budget.?

Texarkana’s Texas High School (THS) has always prided itself on being able to offer real world learning experience at state of the art facilities. It is home to a vibrant and united student body. The public school is well known for competitive sports and even some famous alumni that have gone on to become politicians and professional athletes.? Even the facility itself is widely acknowledged as an architectural beauty.?

THS’s programs include an exceptional multimedia department, giving students from grades 8-12 a unique chance to produce broadcast quality content. TigerVision is THS’s student run television station, broadcast campus wide, locally on cable and online at http://www.tigervision.org/. Daily programming includes a ten minute campus broadcast, in addition to student interviews, Tiger Theatre Company original series, hour long locker room shows during athletic seasons, and digital signage content that is broadcast on three local cable channels over the course of the year.

Instructor Charles Aldridge may consider himself a teacher first and a video professional second, but one only needs to tune into TigerVision to see that, at THS, the two go hand in hand. On top of his duties as an instructor, he also has built and continues to grow a television studio that includes HD cameras and monitors, professional level editors and equipment for streaming and playback. All used and maintained by a group of ever changing amateur cameramen, editors and production crews. To make this all happen smoothly and reliably, Charles counts on Blackmagic Design equipment.

Aldridge said, “We have about 175 students in the program with a variety of experience. The students begin in the eighth grade, finishing daily shows for the middle school in the TigerVision Jr. program. As they enter the high school as freshmen, they learn all the basics, from terminology to technique. They enter their sophomore year running, learning all aspects of shooting, editing and ‘telling the story’, in a very hands on environment.”

He continued, “TigerVision’s curriculum is AV heavy, and students are charged with producing live programming to be streamed across the campus, on cable and online. With daily student shows, weekly sporting events and frequent theatre productions, this essentially means their work is neverending!”

Talent and Miss Texas High
The students that are part of the crew of TigerVision gain valuable hands on experience with professional equipment, which sets those interested in pursuing a future in video apart from other kids their age. This year, even students that aren’t involved in the TigerVision program joined in on some of the action, as participants in the first ever “Tigers Got Talent” show and in the Miss Texarkana and Miss Texas High pageants.

For “Tigers Got Talent”, a take off on television sensation “America’s Got Talent”, TigerVision placed 20 second excerpts of each performance on KnowMi, THS’ social networking site, for students to vote on privately. After 12 finalists were selected from the first two rounds, the finale was shot, edited and placed on the TigerVision website.

The Miss Texas High pageant, which was more of a production, followed shortly thereafter. Streamed live online and broadcast live on cable, the pageant involved multi camera shoots, extensive editing and graphics, and virtually every tool in the TigerVision arsenal.

The theatre control booth and the TigerVision studio are equipped with three Panasonic AG-HPX300 cameras, two Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Extremes and three DeckLink HD Extreme 3D cards for capture, playback, keying and graphics. Editing is done with a combination of Final Cut Pro on a Mac Pro and a Panasonic 400 HD switcher for the theatre. Live playback is handled by the DeckLink cards and a Softron OnTheAir Video Express license, which playout to Panasonic 10K HD projectors in house, as well as out to the community and internet.

According to Aldridge, “The DeckLink cards form the backbone of the TigerVision workflow, allowing students to not only move media easily between systems, but also playback for post production and to live audiences alike.”

Programming at TigerVision is currently broadcast in SD across the THS campus, but students shoot and edit in HD and playback the HD LIVE through a DeckLink HD Extreme that downconverts to SD on the fly.? TigerVision has the eventual goal of transforming into a full HD operation. The DeckLink’s ability to handle both SD and HD material easily will allow for an efficient transition to a full HD studio without costly reinvestment in new technology.

Of the many variables that would be involved in such a transformation, budget is perhaps the most important. Aldridge explained, “For a high school program, we’re considerably sophisticated. The challenge is to maintain that high level of workmanship without breaking the bank.”? Having recently returned from the Student Television Network News (STN) Convention in Dallas, where TigerVision won $10,000 from the first Annual US Education TV Awards and was honored in the ‘Best Live Event’ and ‘Most Innovative Use of Platform’ categories, he continues, “It was wonderful to not only receive this level of recognition, but also to earn some extra funds that will expedite the transformation to HD.”
